International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER)

Migration, ethnic relations, integration and related topics have come increasingly into focus during the past decades. People cross borders and migrate for different reasons, in the process turning, fore example, Western Europe into multicultural societies. These developments necessitate procurement of knowledge and understanding of migration flows and their consequences in order to produce adequate policies and establish best practices of social cohesion.

This stream in the CCG Master's programme is dedicated to the advanced study of policies, practices and responses related to international migration management and the social cohesion of societies that are increasingly affected by globalization. It advances students’ theoetical and practical understanding of 1) international migration including issues of migration flows, push-pull factors, border control, irregular and illegal migration 2) integration and ethnic relations dealing with issues of inclusion and exclusion as well as differentiating categories such as ethnicity, religion, race and gender.

Through the theoretical and practical exploration of immigration trends and policies from a multidisciplinary perspective and the application of qualitative as well as quantitative methods of data collection and analysis, this stream specialization prepares candidates for careers in community, government and private sector organisations, as well as further academic pursuits.
